Indian banks are significantly increasing their cyber insurance coverage as digital threats, data breaches and technology-related risks continue to grow across the financial sector.
According to the report, several banks have increased their cyber insurance protection to around $100 million, nearly double the earlier coverage levels, as institutions seek stronger financial protection against large-scale cyber incidents.
The rise in cyber insurance demand is driven by the increasing frequency and sophistication of attacks targeting banking systems. Financial institutions are facing threats including ransomware, phishing, data theft, malware attacks, identity fraud and disruptions to critical digital infrastructure.
With banks rapidly expanding digital banking services, mobile transactions and online customer platforms, the potential impact of cyber incidents has increased significantly. A major breach can result in financial losses, regulatory penalties, business interruption and reputational damage.
Cyber insurance policies help banks manage these risks by providing coverage for expenses related to incident response, forensic investigations, legal costs, customer notification, data recovery and business interruption losses.
However, insurers are also becoming more cautious while underwriting cyber risks. Banks are increasingly required to demonstrate strong cybersecurity controls, including multi-factor authentication, vulnerability management, incident response plans and regular security assessments.
The growing cyber insurance requirement reflects a broader shift in financial risk management. Banks are no longer viewing cybersecurity only as an IT responsibility but as an enterprise-level operational risk requiring board oversight.
The development also highlights the expanding role of insurers in supporting cyber resilience. Beyond compensation after incidents, cyber insurance providers are encouraging preventive measures and stronger security practices among policyholders.
As digital transformation accelerates, the combination of technology investments, cybersecurity controls and adequate insurance protection will become essential for maintaining trust and stability in the banking ecosystem.
