Amazon Pay India is expanding its insurance business as it moves beyond payments towards a broader financial-services platform covering payments, credit, insurance, savings and investments.

The company recently launched health insurance in partnership with HDFC ERGO and is considering adding travel insurance and other products to its portfolio. Amazon Pay operates as a registered corporate agent, distributing policies from licensed insurers rather than underwriting the insurance itself.

Health insurance has become a key focus because of rising medical costs and relatively low individual health insurance coverage in India. The company sees this as an important opportunity for digital insurance distribution.

Amazon Pay already has experience in insurance distribution through motor insurance. Its expansion into health insurance represents a move towards offering customers multiple financial protection products through an existing digital ecosystem.

The development reflects the growing convergence between fintech and insurance distribution. Large digital platforms can provide insurers with access to extensive customer ecosystems while making insurance purchase and servicing more convenient.

The broader market opportunity is significant. India’s general insurance industry is projected to grow at around 10% compound annual growth rate, from US$43.4 billion in 2026 to more than US$62 billion by 2030, according to GlobalData.

However, digital distribution also creates important risk-management considerations. Health insurance involves complex decisions around coverage, exclusions, waiting periods, hospital networks and claims. Simplifying the purchase journey should not come at the cost of product understanding or suitability.

Data governance and cybersecurity will also become increasingly important as digital platforms handle sensitive financial and health-related information.

Amazon Pay’s expansion could increase competition among digital insurance distributors and encourage insurers to develop more customer-friendly products and digital journeys.

The move also demonstrates how insurance is becoming an increasingly important component of fintech ecosystems. Payments platforms are seeking deeper relationships with customers by offering products that address broader financial needs.

For insurers, partnerships with large digital platforms can provide scale and customer reach. For platforms, insurance creates an opportunity to diversify revenue while increasing engagement with their existing users.

The key challenge will be balancing convenience, customer suitability, data protection and responsible insurance distribution as digital insurance ecosystems expand.
