The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has extended the deadline for stakeholders to submit comments on its proposed reforms by one week, giving insurers, intermediaries and other industry participants additional time to review the proposals and provide feedback.

The extension comes as the regulator undertakes a broad review of the economics and regulatory framework of insurance distribution. The proposed changes have attracted significant attention from the insurance industry because they could affect commission structures, distribution economics and the way insurance products are sold through different channels.

Stakeholders have been assessing the potential impact of the proposals on insurers, individual agents, brokers, corporate agents and other distributors. Industry participants have also raised questions about how changes in commission structures could affect distribution costs, customer acquisition and insurance penetration.

The additional consultation period provides stakeholders an opportunity to submit more detailed representations based on their operational experience and the potential impact of the proposed framework.

For IRDAI, stakeholder consultation is particularly important because changes to insurance distribution economics can have implications beyond commissions. Distribution incentives influence the availability of products, advisor engagement, customer education and the overall accessibility of insurance.

The extension therefore gives the industry more time to examine the proposals and highlight implementation concerns before the regulator finalises its approach. The outcome will be important for the future structure of India’s insurance distribution ecosystem and the industry’s broader objective of expanding insurance coverage.
