The Government of India has extended the insurance facility for cargo shipments under the Resilience & Logistics Intervention for Export Facilitation (RELIEF) scheme until March 2027. The scheme provides up to 95% risk coverage for eligible shipments, offering exporters additional protection against disruptions affecting international maritime trade.

The extension comes amid continuing geopolitical disruptions in West Asia, which have affected maritime logistics and shipping operations across the Gulf region. The government’s decision is aimed at helping exporters manage the elevated risks and uncertainty associated with cargo movement through affected trade routes.

The insurance support can help reduce the financial impact of losses arising from heightened shipping and logistics risks, thereby providing greater certainty to businesses involved in international trade. For exporters, particularly those dependent on maritime transportation, insurance protection can be an important component of broader supply-chain risk management.

The extension also highlights the increasing importance of political risk, marine cargo insurance and supply-chain resilience as geopolitical tensions disrupt established trade routes and logistics networks.

By continuing the facility through March 2027, the government is providing exporters with an additional risk-transfer mechanism during a period of uncertainty in global shipping. The measure is particularly relevant for businesses seeking to maintain export operations while managing exposure to disruptions beyond their direct control.

The development reinforces the role of insurance in supporting trade continuity, particularly when geopolitical events create risks that can affect transportation, cargo movement and international supply chains.
