In a sop to farmers, Uttar Pradesh government today increased the personal accident insurance scheme cover meant for them from Rs one lakh to Rs five lakh.

Â

The decision in this regard was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. The state government had launched Janta personal accident insurance scheme in 2004-2005 covering over 2.5 crore account holder farmers.

As per the definition of farmer under the scheme, the eligible person should be between 12 to 70 and his name should be there in revenue records as account holder and co-account holders. The premium of the scheme is borne by the state government and due to unnatural deaths like lightning, snake bite, electrocution etc, the farmers’ heir were paid Rs 1 lakh, which has been increased to Rs five lakh now.
