The Life Underwriters Guild of India (LUGI), an association of life insurance agents, advisors and development officers, is negotiating with several universities to introduce the country’s first degree course in insurance.

LUGI, which is recognised by Asia Pacific Financial Services Association (APFinSA), is at present conducting a course to award  Fellow of Chartered Financial Planner (FChFP) with six modules. Ever since its inception three years ago, it has become  popular even among financial professionals like chartered accountants and MBA (Finance). As of now, 100 have cleared the  course.

LUGI is keen on educating the underwriters and the public on plus points of investment in insurance. It has training centres at its headquarters at Coimbatore and branches at Bangalore, Ernakulam, Chennai and Amalapuram. LUGI president P. Srinivasan, who was here to attend 10 annual convention of the guild, told The Hindu on Saturday that the degree course in insurance would be introduced in two to three years once tie-up with university and finalisation of syllabus by a panel of experts were completed.
