A fraudster who used to dupe investors promising to revive their old insurance policies was arrested by Bidhannagar police.

Sohel Rana (27) was arrested from a hideout at Amdanga in North 24 Parganas by Bidhannagar officers who were probing into a case of cheating where a man was duped of Rs 43 lakhs by Rana.

The victim, a resident of Shyamnagar Road near Bangur Avenue, had lodged a complaint in October last year that he had first received a call from a man on January 2021, who had claimed himself to be an employee of a private firm and provided him the details of his lapsed insurance policy.

He had told the victim that he will receive over Rs. 51 lakhs as claim settlement and that the company would assist him in claiming the amount.

The caller promised that they will refund lapse insurance policies money if he made another policy and invested in another private company. The victim got persuaded and paid Rs 43.5 lakhs in multiple instalments over one and half years before realizing that he was being duped.
