In a significant move to support the victims of the devastating landslides in Wayanad, the Kerala government has established a dedicated task force to assist survivors in claiming insurance for their various losses. The task force, formed on the recommendation of the cabinet sub-committee stationed in Wayanad since the disaster, aims to ensure that insurance claims are processed and disbursed promptly.

Swift Action for Victims

The task force, led by Revenue Recovery Deputy Collector K Gopinath, has already begun its operations. The team’s primary responsibility is to coordinate with different government departments, insurance companies, and other relevant agencies to gather comprehensive details of the insurance policies held by the victims. This includes policies related to vehicle insurance, life insurance, home insurance, crop insurance, and insurance for pets and livestock.

Collaborative Efforts

The task force will collect information from survivors currently residing in relief camps or with relatives, ensuring that all necessary details are documented accurately. The ‘lead bank’ district manager, along with the district manager of the Directorate of Industries and Commerce and the Deputy Director of the Economics and Statistics Department, are key members of the task force. The term ‘lead bank’ refers to the institution responsible for underwriting the insurance policies.

Rising Toll and Continued Search Efforts

As of the latest reports, the death toll from the landslides in the Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas of Wayanad on July 30 has tragically risen to 226, with 138 people still reported missing. The task force’s work is critical in providing financial relief to the affected families during this challenging time.

This initiative underscores the Kerala government’s commitment to supporting the survivors and ensuring that they receive the financial aid they are entitled to through their insurance policies.
