The Karnataka government has assured farmers that longstanding issues related to delayed crop insurance payments will be resolved, following growing concerns from agricultural communities in the coastal region, particularly Mangaluru. Officials acknowledged that delays in claim settlements under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and other crop insurance schemes have caused financial stress for farmers already affected by erratic weather conditions.
Addressing farmers’ representatives, state authorities said that discrepancies in data submission, assessment of crop loss, and coordination between insurers, banks, and implementing agencies were among the key reasons behind delayed disbursements. The government has now initiated steps to streamline the claims process and ensure faster settlement of genuine claims.
Officials confirmed that pending claims are being reviewed at the district and state levels, with instructions issued to insurance companies to expedite verification and release payments without further procedural bottlenecks. The administration has also assured better coordination with banks to avoid delays caused by documentation and account-related issues.
Farmers had raised concerns that delays in insurance payouts were affecting their ability to reinvest in the next cropping cycle, repay agricultural loans, and meet household expenses. Many stressed that timely insurance compensation is critical, especially in years marked by crop losses due to excess rainfall, drought, or pest attacks.
The government reiterated its commitment to strengthening the crop insurance framework by improving transparency, enhancing digital monitoring of claims, and holding stakeholders accountable for lapses. Officials also urged farmers to ensure accurate reporting of crop details and timely submission of required documents to avoid future delays.
With agriculture remaining a key contributor to Karnataka’s rural economy, the state government said it would continue working with insurers and central agencies to restore farmer confidence in crop insurance schemes and ensure timely financial protection against agricultural risks.
