The General Insurance Council has appointed Dr. S. Prakash as Chief Executive Officer – Health Insurance Ecosystem and Strategic Partnerships, strengthening its focus on collaboration and efficiency in the health insurance sector.
In his new role, Dr. Prakash will work closely with insurers, hospitals, regulators, and other key stakeholders to enhance transparency, operational efficiency, and trust across the health insurance value chain. His mandate includes improving coordination among ecosystem partners to ensure policyholders experience fewer challenges during hospitalisation and claim settlement.
With over 18 years of leadership experience in the health insurance domain, Dr. Prakash brings deep industry insight. He spent nearly 15 years at Star Health and Allied Insurance, where he rose to the position of Managing Director, gaining extensive exposure to underwriting, claims management, and healthcare partnerships.
A key priority for Dr. Prakash will be simplifying health insurance processes through smoother claims handling, clearer communication between insurers and hospitals, and faster grievance redressal. The objective is to minimise disputes, reduce delays, and improve customer experience at critical moments of care.
Commenting on the appointment, Dr. Tapan Singhel, Chairman, General Insurance Council, said that Dr. Prakash’s rare combination of medical knowledge and insurance expertise enables him to understand the ecosystem from multiple perspectives — patients, doctors, hospitals, and insurers. He added that the role will focus on reducing friction, strengthening trust, promoting standardisation of care, and leveraging technology platforms such as NHCX to make health insurance more predictable, transparent, and customer-friendly.
