A major cybersecurity breach has struck U.S. auto insurance provider AssuranceAmerica, exposing sensitive information of more than 6.9 million individuals after hackers targeted a company employee earlier this year.
According to regulatory filings, the unauthorized access was first detected on March 17, 2026, after cybercriminals compromised an employee’s credentials and gained entry into the firm’s IT systems. The breach reportedly involved a wide range of personal and insurance-related data, including names, insurance policy numbers, claims details, driver’s license numbers, vehicle information, and Social Security numbers.
AssuranceAmerica has informed law enforcement and affected state authorities about the incident. The scale of the breach has raised serious concerns about data protection practices in the insurance sector, highlighting ongoing challenges in safeguarding customer information against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
