From both the insurer’s perspective and the insured’s point of view, the recent events underline the urgent need for mass insurance coverage integrated with broader disaster risk management strategies.

1. Flash Floods and Landslides: Sudden downpours overwhelm rivers and streams, causing floods and triggering landslides that bury homes, roads, and infrastructure.

2. Urban Flooding: Cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai are increasingly at risk due to inadequate drainage systems, encroachments, and poor urban planning.

3. Mountain Ecology at Risk: In the Himalayas, continuous construction of roads, hydropower projects, and commercial complexes weakens natural slopes and destabilizes soil, making the mountains more vulnerable to landslides.

Continuous Construction and Ecological Strain

Mountains are natural shock absorbers for rain and snow. But unchecked construction-roads, hotels, hydropower tunnels, and deforestation-has eroded their resilience. Key issues include:

  • Soil Destabilization: Blasting for roads/hydropower weakens rock strata.

  • Tourism Pressure: Unregulated urbanization in hill towns multiplies the disaster impact.
