ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd., the country’s largest private sector General Insurance Company unveiled the results of the listing study on National Survey of Household Income and Expenditure (NSHIE 2011) titled “Living in India”. The survey, covering 5 lakh households, was conducted in 32 states and union territories across Socio Economic Classes (SECs) by NCAER and had a specific section on Health/Health Insurance.

According to the survey, affluent and upwardly mobile families in India report better health and are more confident of managing medical expenditure in case of any emergency. The study  covers aspects such as family’s health status, frequency of hospitalization & costs incurred for the same, insurance coverage and confidence in managing medical expenditure.

Elaborating on the key findings of the survey Mr. Bhargav Dasgupta, Managing Director and CEO, ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd. said, “The study throws light on  interesting aspects regarding the health of India’s masses and the ability to manage health related expenses. It provides us with valuable insights on the spread of insurance across India and perceptions regarding health/ health insurance  across different demographic groups”. He further added “The study also highlights the underlying gaps in the ability to manage one’s health, which is a concern area. More efforts like these  will be helpful  in devising appropriate corrective measures.”

The survey reveals   that around 15% of Indian families report hospitalisation of a member “at least once” within last one year.  A significant finding of the study is the wide dispersion in scores across SECs. While 2/3rd (65%) Indian families perceived their health condition as good/excellent, the scores vary widely across SECS- 84% for  SEC A1 households and sharply decreasing to only 47% for  SEC E3.  A more stark pattern is seen in terms of confidence of managing medical expenditures. A high  90% of SEC A households are confident of managing medical expenditure in case family members fall seriously ill, whereas this number is only 23% for  SEC E3.

Subsequent to this listing study, the detailed research would be carried out across 1 lakh households in the country where further diagnostics on the Health Insurance landscape in India would be obtained.
