Public sector general insurer Oriental Insurance Company Ltd (OICL) plans to invest around ₹500 crore over the next three years to strengthen its digital capabilities, with a focus on customer experience, data infrastructure and digital service delivery. The investment has already been budgeted internally, and some requests for proposals have been floated.

A major component of the technology roadmap is a data lake project, which will provide a centralised repository for structured, semi-structured and unstructured data. The insurer is also strengthening its data-security infrastructure, reflecting the growing importance of data protection as insurance operations become increasingly digital.

The company also plans to introduce more digital products to make insurance services more accessible to customers. This forms part of a broader effort to improve the customer journey across purchasing, servicing and claims.

Digital Claims Expansion

Oriental Insurance has already launched an end-to-end digital journey for Motor Own Damage claims. The initiative is intended to make claims processing faster, more transparent and more convenient for policyholders.

The insurer plans to replicate this digital claims approach across other insurance segments. This could reduce manual intervention and create greater consistency in claims processing while giving customers better visibility into their claims.

The company has also launched Oriental DigiBiz, its first dedicated digital office for customers purchasing insurance directly online. The platform enables eligible customers to purchase policies without intermediary intervention and provides discounts to qualifying customers.

Data and Analytics Become Central

The data-lake initiative is particularly important because insurers generate large volumes of information through underwriting, claims, customer interactions, distribution and policy servicing.

OICL had already issued an RFP in June 2026 for a data lakehouse, governance and analytics platform covering fraud detection and business intelligence. The proposed engagement includes one year of implementation and five years of subsequent engagement.

A stronger data architecture can potentially support more effective fraud detection, business intelligence, portfolio analysis and customer-service initiatives. However, the value of such infrastructure will depend on data quality, governance, security and the ability to integrate information across existing systems.

Premium Crosses ₹20,000 Crore

The digital investment comes after OICL crossed ₹20,000 crore in gross premium during FY2025-26. According to the Ministry of Finance, growth was supported by its Group Personal Accident, health, fire and motor insurance portfolios.

The company has also introduced products and enhancements including Oriental Gramin Health, Oriental PA Parivar Suraksha, Roadside Assistance Add-on and an enhanced Return to Invoice Add-on.

The technology programme therefore comes at a point when OICL is simultaneously seeking to strengthen its digital infrastructure, expand its product portfolio and improve customer accessibility.

Implications for Insurance Risk Management

The investment has implications beyond customer convenience. Greater digitalisation increases the importance of cybersecurity, data governance, technology resilience and third-party technology risk.

A centralised data environment can improve analytics but also creates a need for strong access controls, data-quality processes, privacy safeguards and appropriate recovery arrangements.

For an insurer, digital claims and direct online distribution also increase dependence on technology availability. Any prolonged disruption could affect policy sales, servicing and claims operations simultaneously.

The ₹500-crore programme therefore represents not simply a technology upgrade but a broader shift towards data-driven and digitally enabled insurance operations.

For the insurance industry, the development illustrates how public sector insurers are investing in digital infrastructure to improve customer experience while strengthening the technology foundations required for more efficient underwriting, claims and risk management.
