Girish Chandra Chaturvedi, secretary in the ministry of petroleum and natural gas, is seen as a frontrunner to succeed J Harinarayan, chairman, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA), whose term comes to an end on end-February 2013.

The ministry is understood to have received over two dozen applications for the position till Wednesday – the last day for submitting applications. The names of the applicants are not yet known.

The chances of a civil servant being appointed has increased with the government seeking ‘secretary or equivalent’ as desirable qualification. The government is also in the process of selecting two second-rung positions in IRDA. First is a member-actuary and the second member-distribution. In addition to member IRDA, the government will interview candidates for two managing director positions in Life Insurance Corporation of India. The interview for the positions will take place in the fourth week of November.
